DialogSafe: two people watching a film, with the profanity silenced on the soundtrack

The swearing, gone.
Everything else, untouched.

DialogSafe adds a clean audio track to a video you already have and leaves the original untouched. No streaming service, no subscription, and nothing leaves your computer.

How it works

1

Pick a video

Choose a file on your computer. Nothing is uploaded, and it is never copied anywhere.

2

It listens

Speech recognition runs on your own machine and finds every word on your list, with its exact timing.

3

You get a clean track

A second audio track is added with those moments silenced. The original stays exactly as it was.

Plays on what you already own

The result is an ordinary video file with one extra audio track. Your TV, Plex, Jellyfin, VLC, a phone, a USB stick: they all treat it as a normal file, and switching between the clean and original track is the same as switching to another language.

Nothing about the picture changes, and no special player is needed.

You decide what counts

DialogSafe ships with 110 built-in terms. Add your own, or take out any of the built-in ones you would rather keep. It is your list, and it stays on your machine.

What you need

macOS
11 or later, on an Apple Silicon Mac. Signed and notarised by Apple.
Windows
10 or 11, 64-bit.
Disk space
About 1 GB for the app, plus room for the video you make.
Internet
Needed once to activate. After that it works with none at all.
Speed
A 23-minute episode takes 57 seconds on an Apple M3 Max, roughly 24x faster than real time. A two-hour film on that machine takes about five minutes. Older or slower computers take longer, so treat this as the fast end rather than a promise.

Questions

Does it change the original audio?

No. The original track is copied across untouched and stays selectable. The clean track is added alongside it and set as the default, so you can switch back at any point.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs on your own computer, including the speech recognition. The only time DialogSafe uses the internet is the one moment you activate your licence.

Will it catch every word?

It works from speech recognition, so it is very good but not perfect. Mumbled lines, heavy accents and loud action scenes are where anything gets missed. Try it on your own films first: the first three videos are free, which is exactly what that is for.

Windows says "Windows protected your PC".

The Windows installer is not code-signed yet, so Windows shows that screen on a program it has not seen before. Click "More info", then "Run anyway". This goes away once the certificate has been in circulation for a while. The Mac version is signed and notarised by Apple and opens without warnings.

Is it a subscription?

No. One payment, both the macOS and Windows versions, and nothing expires.

Does it work with Plex or Jellyfin?

Yes. The file it produces is a normal video with an extra audio track, so Plex and Jellyfin list it as a second audio option the same way they list another language.
